I finally have to say something about all these survival videos and they way they make their water filters. I have not seen one made correctly yet. There is a specific layering of the filter that is designed to not only filter the water, but the ability to clean the filter.
My Dad was a class A filter plant operator for the cities of Ashland OR, and of Ft. Collins CO for over thirty years. I grew up in a filter plant and watch the development of filter construction. On the bottom of the filter are porous bricks. They are hollow like a cinder block. Laid horizontal on the bottom of the filter bed to create a piping channel to direct the filtered water out to the exit pipe. On the top side of these cinderblock like bricks are many small holes. These holes allow water to pass through the brick into the channels to the exit pipe.
The first lower level that is placed over the bricks covering the many holes is large gravel (3/4") to prevent the clogging of the porous filter blocks under the filter. The second layer, pea gravel is layered to prevent the clogging of the large gravel. Then a layer of fine sand. The very top layer is charcoal. The charcoal is on top so it can be frequently changed out. Charcoal removes bad odors and bad flavors. It also removes potential poisons. It must be changed out, that is why it is ontop.
All the filter ingredient must be boiled to kill pathogens before being layered in the filter. To clean the filter, the top layer of charcoal is removed. Then back force clean pre-boiled water through the porous brick layer. Up through the gravel and sand layers overflowing the top of the filter until the water is clear. This must be done slowly and gently to not disturb the layering of the gravel and sand. Place new wet pre-boiled charcoal on top and the filter is clean and ready to use again. I need to edit to add this comment: WARNING this filtered water is not treated for killing bactiriea, virus, and ameba. After filtering, this water must be boiled before drinking. Sever illness or Death can result from un-purified water. Wells are serious hazards if not deep enough and properly protected. Just because it is ground water, does not make it safe.
